2 months in immigration jail, $25,000 in legal fees: ‘Our new reality’

Mirian Martinez-Aranda, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine, said those who experience even short-term immigration detention “face profound consequences” that affect their entire family. “The chronic stress developed during detention does not simply end upon release,” Martinez-Aranda said. “Instead, it often continues because immigrants are typically released under conditions of supervision and must remain in contact with ICE while their immigration case is ongoing.” Martinez-Aranda called the experience profoundly dehumanizing.
