15 graduates receive their bachelor’s degrees in sociology at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility

A total of 15 people who are incarcerated the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa earned their degrees in sociology from the University of California, Irvine, on Wednesday. "I feel very proud to be part of this group because, despite being identified as a person who is incarcerated, I’m now also identified as a student and I can do something meaningful with my life," said an emotional Carlos Ortiz, who has been incarcerated since 2015. He indicated that his past doesn't affect his desire to learn while in prison.
