For Michelle Mann Yun Wei and her Taiwanese American friends, it’s challenging enough to explain what Taiwan is, let alone navigate differences in family lineage in the diaspora. … At the University of California, Irvine, she researched the formation of identity among Taiwanese American immigrants "in the context of a subjugated homeland and its struggle for independence." “Maybe growing up in America, I'm more influenced by democratic values and wanting this type of liberation for Taiwanese people,” said Wei, who recently graduated and may go to Taiwan to teach English.
