“What makes the Calderons unique is that they are passing on a baton within the same
family, within the same surname,” said Louis DeSipio, a political science professor
at the University of California, Irvine, who studies California politics. “It’s not
at all uncommon for an elected official who’s leaving office, particularly after a
long term of service, to designate a successor … With the Calderons, though, the desire
seems to have been to maintain the influence within the same family.”
