DESCRIPTION: This forum brings together an interdisciplinary group of junior and senior scholars to explore two foundational affects of modern political subjectivities: love and terror. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, participants will trace different uses of love as a hegemonic tool of domination, as in the case of patriotic love, or as an inspiration for subversive forms of critical solidarity. In turn, paying attention to the affective power of dominance can better elucidate contemporary discourses of terror in relation to the historical rise of nationalisms and colonialisms. The forum will examine these two highly resonant keywords in relation to one another, as dialogically interdependent terms in the constitution of modern forms of sovereignty and subjectivities.

The format of the forum embraces an explicitly anti-hierarchical approach to foster intellectual exchange and dialogue. Participants are members of affinity groups, and they will present  their work at the general panels at the conclusion of a day of small workshops on their historical, ethnographic, critical, and philosophical approaches to love and terror. Please join us for two general panels and a film screening and discussion.
