Matthew Beckmann, a political science professor at the University of California, Irvine, said Americans should be alert to Trump’s rhetoric about a third term, but also trust that the constitutional system is designed to withstand such challenges. “The bottom line is that American democracy is vulnerable to a president and party willing to use their powers to subvert the rule of law and the will of the people,” he said. “However, our democratic system offers U.S. citizens and public officials levers to mitigate those vulnerabilities.”
