The best minimum wage research is on the US, because statutory pay floors vary at the state and city level. This creates a superior testing ground for economists to exploit policy differences. David Neumark, professor of economics at the University of California, Irvine, and Peter Shirley, deputy secretary at the West Virginia Department of Revenue, assembled the reputable literature on US minimum wages from the early 1990s to 2021. … The majority of this research shows that a minimum wage rise lowers employment, especially among younger and less-educated workers.
