Undocumented families fearing deportation lean on caregiver affidavits to make family preparedness plans

That difficulty engaging with school material is more common than we realize, said Laura Enriquez, an associate professor of Chicano Latino studies at UC Irvine, who studies the impact of immigration policy on students. “Not being able to focus when they’re in class, when they’re studying, when they’re taking a test, because they’re thinking about these things, right. Maybe their mom didn’t answer the phone right before class or they see something pop up on their social media feed – and it’s hard to jump back in,” Enriquez said. She said that, in general, undocumented students or students with undocumented relatives have a higher risk of failing classes and having a lower GPA.
