- Four-year term offers political scientist opportunity to advance inclusive excellence through deliberate design of large, diverse editorial team
The Western Political Science Association’s flagship journal, Political Research Quarterly, will soon have a new editorial home at the University of California, Irvine with Charles Anthony “Tony” Smith, political science professor, serving as editor in chief. His four-year term, beginning in July 2022 with an option for a two-year extension, will seek to embrace and elevate inclusive excellence through deliberate design of his large and diverse associate editorial team.
“As WPSA prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, we are delighted to have been chosen as the next editorial team for its flagship journal,” he says. “PRQ is a primary outlet for cutting edge research and has been at the frontier of research for general interest journals since its inception. As we assume stewardship of the journal, UCI will continue to shape the field of political science and move the discipline forward with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the highest professional standards for research.”
With Smith at the helm, the editorial team includes:
Angelia Wilson, Professor, University of Manchester
Stephen Nuno, Professor, Northern Arizona University
Jami Taylor, Professor, University of Toledo
Julia Jordan-Zachery, Professor, Wake Forest University
Wendy Wong, Professor, University of Toronto
Davin Phoenix, Associate Professor, University of California, Irvine
Heather Smith-Cannoy, Associate Professor, Arizona State University
Christopher Stout, Associate Professor, Oregon State University
Jennifer Garcia, Assistant Professor, Oberlin College
Andrew Flores, Assistant Professor, American University
“Every member of the team falls into one or more of these categories: a woman; African-American, Asian, LatinX, LGB, Trans, and/or First Gen. Second, we have a wide variety of institutions represented, from liberal arts to R1, from very large to very small, and from a variety of states and regions,” Smith says. “If you dive deeper into our backgrounds, you will see we also have broad coverage over the fields and sub-fields most germane to PRQ. We have put together a large team in part to ensure we fully embrace diversity and are able to give appropriate, proper, and timely consideration to all submissions.”
