Donald Hoffman, [emeritus] professor at the University of California, Irvine, has been working on the problem of reality. … Hoffman has proposed something he calls, The Interface Theory of Perception. This theory proposes that the things we see with our eyes are really more like desktop icons to represent what is really there. … Hoffman says that our strategies for the perception of reality are tuned for survival, not the truth. What we see around us is merely an abstraction of what is really there.
