“Education itself has been a very, very violent place for Black students,” said Damien
Sojoyner, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California,
Irvine. Black students are held back through various “enclosures,” which Sojoyner
describes as ways to corral Black freedom, especially if those freedoms run counter
to state desires.
