For Shauna Gillooly, a peace-building and conflict researcher for University of California Irvine who is based in Colombia, the return to illegality and violence in the remote, rural regions once controlled by the FARC shouldn’t come as a surprise. “Many of these communities have been forced to make informal deals with the armed groups who control these regions,” Gillooly told TNH.
