From the OC Register:
The men’s and women’s basketball teams of UC Irvine share a passion for basketball.
But they’ve also found common ground off the court, in sociology classrooms around
campus. Seven of the 16 men’s players are sociology majors, and five of the 15 women’s
players are majoring in the subject…Sociology is a popular major for basketball players
for a variety of reasons. One is the major’s flexibility of lecture schedules, according
to David Snow, a professor of sociology at UCI. Snow serves as UCI’s faculty athletic
representative. The NCAA mandates such a position to be the liaison between the institution
and the athletic department, with the role of monitoring student-athlete eligibility.
“We offer courses throughout the day and we don’t have labs,” Snow said of UCI’s sociology
department.
