Historizing the Music Worlds of the Eastside

Jorge Nicolás Leal is an Assistant Professor of Mexican American/Latinx History at the University of California, Riverside. As a public historian, he oversees the Rock Archivo de LÁ, an online collection of Latinx music cultures ephemera. Dr. Leal is also the co-curator of the museum exhibit “A Great Day in East L.A.: Celebrando de Eastside Sound,” that is currently on view until August 2026 at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Downtown Los Angeles. This is a is a multi-media exhibition that explores the dynamic musical influences of East Los Angeles artists who developed an eclectic musical identity and history. Against all odds, East L.A. artists created a rich musical tradition that became well known all over the world in the twentieth century and into the present.
