About the talk:
False beliefs stemming from disinformation have been exploited by politicians to erode trust in reliable sources of information, fuel support of anti-establishment demagogues, and incite people to back anti-democratic political movements. In the US, such false beliefs have become eminently consequential. This talk presents a "3M Model" based on mistrust, misinformation, and motivated reasoning to better understand the ubiquity of false belief and to develop interventions that might lessen their grip on the American psyche.
About the speaker:
Joe Pierre is Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UCSF. His academic work explores the "grey area" between psychopathology and normality with a focus on delusion-like beliefs including conspiracy theories. Dr. Pierre has authored over 100 publications related to schizophrenia, antipsychotic medications, substance-induced psychosis, delusions and delusion-like beliefs, auditory hallucinations and voice-hearing, and other topics including the neuroscience of free will and culturally sanctioned suicide. He is also the author of False: How Mistrust, Disinformation, and Motivated Reasoning Make Us Believe Things That Aren't True as well as the Psych Unseen blog at Psychology Today.
