This talk is about the dual history of comics, a medium which has been used for both anti-US and pro- US propaganda. In the talk we will examine comic books as a special tool with the capacity to be used for seemingly oppositional messaging. We will also think through the ways that comics are seen as a silly or simple form of expression, which actually increases its efficacy as a tool of persuasion. In other words, how can an object that seemingly relinquishes its authority, actually become more authoritative and effective in its messaging? With this new way of thinking about comics, we will spend the rest of our time together using the case studies of Darna and Scarlet Witch in order to face topics like facism and misinformation.
