This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam-American War. This violent conflict not only divided the United States and Vietnam, but it galvanized anti-colonial movements in the Global South and tore apart other regions in the world. This Illuminations event draws on the expertise of three female artist-scholars who are Cham/Vietnamese/Cambodian to look back at half a century of trauma, violence, and genocide. At this half century milestone, we take the opportunity discuss what the post-Vietnam future holds, especially in the present-day context in which there are so many new “Vietnam-like” protracted wars (e.g. Gaza, Ukraine) and students are protesting in a manner similar to the late 1960s.
