Russia’s war in Ukraine and the rapid growth of China’s nuclear arsenal are bringing nuclear weapons policy issues back into national focus. The US nuclear weapons design laboratories and production complex are executing weapons modernization programs to update the stockpile to technologies of today. A lingering question is whether modernization will lead to a stockpile that is sufficient for today’s challenges.
