Heidi Hardt, UCI associate professor of political science, will discuss the challenges that instructors face who may seek to diversify syllabi while retaining traditionally-cited scholarship. She will present findings from articles that she and co-authors published on gender representation in the authors of assigned readings in Ph.D.-level courses. Similar to previous work that found evidence of a gender citation gap across many disciplines, this research found evidence of a gender readings gap across all sub-fields within her own discipline. Hardt will discuss what the work suggests about factors that drive and maintain this gap, and she will share research on how the readings gap affects graduate students (across genders and across racial groups) in surprising ways. She will also share suggestions for and answer questions from instructors and students about diversity in graduate-level syllabi.
