The images of President Nixon in China are iconic – the handshake with Zhou En-Lai upon arrival, the meeting with Mao Zedong, the visit at the Great Wall, and, of course, the signing of the Shanghai Communique. Just as interesting as the visit to China is the behind-the-scenes planning that went into it. For the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration, UCI Social Sciences and the Long US-China Institute welcome the Richard Nixon Foundation, and Professor Luke Nichter, from Texas A&M University-Central Texas to explore the archival records considering Nixon’s historic trip, as well as the implications and lessons that still reverberate today.
