Many disciplines assign central importance to structure. Chemists study molecular structure. Linguists study syntactic structure. Music theorists study rhythmic and harmonic structure. In each discipline, and in many others, practitioners study how a complex entity (e.g. a molecule, or a sentence, or a sonata) arises when less complex parts (e.g. atoms, or words, or notes) are embedded in an appropriate structure. Building on work by Koslicki, Rescorla will highlight the foundational role that structural description plays across a range of disciplines. Rescorla will analyze what it is to provide a structural description, and will highlight some key consequences of gus analysis. Rescorla will then compare his approach with an alternative espoused by Rescher and Oppenheim.
