UC Irvine Libraries and the School of Social Sciences present

Open Access: Redefining Impact @ UCI
An event to kick-off the University of California's new Open Access Policy

October 21, 2013
11:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Langson Library, Room 570 (Caroline A. Laudati Conference Room)

In July 2013, the Academic Senate of the University of California (UC) passed an Open Access Policy ensuring that future research articles authored by UC faculty will be made available to the public at no charge. The intent of the policy is to make research articles more easily and broadly discoverable and freely available to advance UC research to anyone in California or the world. This event kicks off the initiative with an upload-a-thon of faculty publications. UCI faculty will begin depositing their published research articles to eScholarship, UC's open access repository for faculty, staff and students. Articles will be available to the public without charge via eScholarship in tandem with their publication in scholarly journals. The UC Open Access Policy is in line with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy directive requiring "each Federal Agency with over $100 million in annual conduct of research and development expenditures to develop a plan to support increased public access to results of the research funded by the Federal Government."

Participants and panelists include:

  • Lorelei Tanji, University Librarian, UC Irvine Libraries
  • Bill Maurer, Dean, School of Social Sciences, UCI
  • Tom Boellstorff, Professor, Anthropology, UCI
  • Chris Kelty, Associate Professor, Information Studies and Center for Society and Genetics, UCLA
  • Mike Goulden, Professor and Chair, Earth System Science, UCI
  • Mitchell C. Brown, Research Librarian, Chemistry, Earth System Science, and Russian Studies, and Scholarly Communications Coordinator, UCI

The event will begin with a 60-minute panel discussion hosted by Lorelei Tanji, University Librarian and Bill Maurer, dean of the School of Social Sciences. Among the topics to be discussed are the UC Open Access Policy, the impact of open access publishing, and the benefit of open access research articles made available through eScholarship.

Following the panel discussion, Mitchell Brown and UCI librarians will hold an "Upload-a-thon" workshop to demonstrate how to place previously published research articles into eScholarship. Attendees are encouraged to bring their publication citations and upload their own research articles as part of the hands-on session.

A light lunch will be available at 11:30 a.m. prior to the presentation. Please RSVP to mcbrown@uci.edu by October 18.
