Ariel Ahram is assistant professor and Middle East studies coordinator at the College of International Studies of the University of Oklahoma. His book, Proxy Warriors: The Rise and Fall of State-Sponsored Militias (Stanford University Press, 2011), examines the emergence of armed non-state actors in Indonesia, Iran, and Iraq.  He has published widely on issues of Middle East politics, state frailty, and international conflict. He earned a Ph.D. in government and M.A. in Arab studies from Georgetown University and a B.A. from Brandeis University.
