This talk will reconstruct the initial phase of activism around Kannada and compare it with the contemporary phase seen in Bangalore, which has acquired new interlocutors with differing aspirations amidst a vastly changed linguistic milieu.  What are the possible consequences for the imaginations of community and democracy in Bangalore? The rest of the talk will address this question.
