Paul Gootenberg is a former Rhodes scholar who teaches Latin American history and sociology at New York's Stony Brook University. He is an internationally-recognized authority on Peruvian history and the history of global commodities and a pioneering scholar in the history of drugs. His latest book is Andean Cocaine: The Making of a Global Drug (University of North Carolina Press, 2008).
