How the federal government is painting immigrants as criminals on social media

The stream of social media posts with photos of mostly nonwhite people are meant to draw an emotional response, says Leo Chavez, an emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. They "have been used repeatedly over and over to get people to buy into, really drastic, drastic and draconian actions and policies," he said. … The fact that the government's social media posts come with statements about criminal history as well as photos reinforces that emotional response, Chavez said.
