Familism – a cultural value that emphasizes close bonds and family-before-self – has protective mental health benefits for Latina mothers during early parenting, according to a new multi-university study led by Isabel F. Almeida, assistant professor of Chicano/Latino studies at the University of California, Irvine. “One year after the baby’s birth, mothers who had higher levels of familism experienced lower depressive symptoms and lower perceived stress,” says Almeida.
