Today is Women’s Equality Day, a day that commemorates the passing of the 19th Amendment back in 1920 – and that amendment gave women the right to vote in the United States. But more than a hundred years later, gender parity remains an issue. Joining us now to discuss that is Judy Tzu-Chun Wu. She’s a history and Asian American Studies professor at UC Irvine. … “I think the day is significant because it really holds the promise of what a democratic society should be: that the people who reside here have a stake in society and have a voice in terms of the political functioning of the United States. But, as you pointed out, it is a promise and it was not quite realized both historically and certainly not today,” says Wu.
