We are learning more about what’s driving some companies to move their headquarters out of California. … David Neumark is a [Distinguished] professor of economics at UC Irvine and adjunct fellow at the nonprofit Public Policy Institute of California’s Economic Policy Center. … The PPIC looked at data between 2010 and 2021 and found that out of 47,000 company headquarters in the state, “California lost about 789 headquarters in total,” says Neumark, representing close to 2% of company headquarters. … “Given that a headquarters is leaving California, it’s more likely to go to a state with lower taxes and regulations,” adds Neumark.
