Long Bui, a professor of global and international studies at the University of California, Irvine, said his Vietnamese American students often wonder why people don’t talk openly about the war. American history classes, he said, tend to narrowly define the war as a fight against the spread of communism. … “I think the way that we teach is very depoliticized, and the war was very political. “A lot of times, what they learned about the war comes from their own families, and they’re trying to piece it together,” Bùi said.
