Demonstrations in solidarity with Gaza continue taking place at college campuses across our region. In Orange County, students at UC Irvine launched solidarity encampments. Amber Frias reports for the NBC4 News on April 29, 2024. “At this time, we see more families and people that don’t appear to be students coming in with sleeping bags. … For the most part up until now, this demonstration has remained peaceful. … David Meyer, a professor of sociology at UCI, believes students there are following the example of campus protests against South Africa during the 1980’s. ‘The campaign against South Africa focused on divestment on campuses and students set up shanty towns to mimic the way South Africans were living in South Africa.’ … [Nationwide] protesters are only growing more vocal. ‘I think they are going to raise the salience of the issue. They’re going to make it harder to ignore,’” [Meyer said.]
