“One of the reasons I think [Katie] Porter announced so early is to claim the front-runner mantel and show how much money she can raise, but everyone who runs for Senate raises a lot of money,” said University of California, Irvine political science professor Tony Smith. “Having barely eked out a win in what should have been a safe district does not make her a very compelling candidate for Senate.”
