Lev Nachman [UCI political science Ph.D. 21], Shelley Rigger, Chit Wai John Mok [UCI sociology Ph.D. candidate] and Nathan Kar Ming Chan [UCI political science Ph.D. candidate] write: "Years of turmoil and tightening restrictions on political participation and individual liberty are prompting many Hong Kongers to consider emigration. Our 2020 study found a large proportion of Hong Kongers have thought about leaving Hong Kong permanently. Among them, the most desired destination is Taiwan. But what kind of reception will Hong Kongers find in Taiwan? Are the Taiwanese ready for an influx of newcomers arriving on their shores?"
