From the OC Register:
John Naviaux (UC Irvine class of '12) is brushing up on his Norwegian and packing
his bags for a 10-month research excursion to the Arctic. This August, the 23-year-old
UC Irvine alumnus and 2013 Fulbright fellowship recipient will travel to Norway to
study the impact of atmospheric mercury pollution on the Arctic ecosystem. He will
be stationed at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and will work with
a research station in the Norwegian Arctic islands to collect and analyze snow samples.
"It's important to know where the mercury is in the snow," he said. "If it's all at
the top level, intuitively, a little bit of snow melt will cause a big increase in
mercury in the surrounding area which can cause problems in health or the global environment."
