Montebello Library glances back to the history of `Brick People'

- Louis DeSipio, Chicano/Latino studies and political science professor, is quoted in the Whittier Daily News November 13, 2012
From the Whittier Daily News:
It takes a lot of construction to build a city like Los Angeles and its suburbs.
A major part of the building of the city came right from a brick factory on the edge
of current day Montebello and Commerce. The Montebello Public Library will take a
look back at Simons, California, the company town for the Simon Brick Factory in the
early 1900s, with film screenings of, "The Brick People." The public has two chances
to view the documentary, at 2 p.m. and 3:45 p.m., which tells the story of the Mexican
immigrants who lived and worked at the brickyard… "On the one hand it's a case study
of Los Angeles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and how that rise fundamentally
related to race relations," Louis DeSipio, associate professor of Chicano/Latino studies,
UC Irvine, said in the documentary.
