Three UCI sociologists elected to Sociological Research Association

Three professors from UCI’s Department of Sociology – Nina Bandelj, David S. Meyer, and Evan Schofer – have recently been elected to the Sociological Research Association. The highly selective 400-person society of sociological scholars was founded in 1936 and annually elects up to 14 new members. The honor recognizes those selected as being the most successful researchers in their field.
Nina Bandelj (pictured above), professor, received her Ph.D. from Princeton University and joined the UCI faculty in 2003. She specializes in economic sociology, culture, postsocialist transformations, and globalization. She is the author or editor of five books, and her new book Money Talks – co-edited with Frederick Wherry and Viviana Zelizer - will be published next spring. She is also one of the current editors of the Socio-Economic Review and has published work in the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, and Theory and Society, to name a few. At UCI, Bandelj co-directs the Center for Organizational Research while serving as the School of Social Sciences equity advisor and interim associate dean of research and graduate studies. She’s also a faculty fellow in the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, UCI’s Center for the Study of Democracy, Slovenian National Research Agency, and American Council of Learned Societies, among others.
David S. Meyer, professor, is an expert on social movements and public policy. He’s
the author or editor of eight books including his most recent, The Politics of Protest: Social Movements in America, which has been cited by numerous media outlets on topics from the Occupy Wall Street
movement to current police protests. One of his studies on political opportunity,
published in 2004 in Social Forces, won the American Sociological Association Collective Behavior and Social Movements
Section Best Article Award. He’s also published work in the American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, and Social Problems, among others. He served as the series associate editor of Social Movement, Protest and Contention and is on the editorial board of Mobilization: An International Journal. His research has been funded by UC ACCORD, the National Science Foundation, the
Urban Child Institute, and UCI’s Center for the Study of Democracy. Meyer came to
UCI in 1999 following appointments at Harvard University, Tufts University, University
of Michigan, and the City University of New York.
Evan Schofer, professor, specializes in comparative political sociology, the sociology
of education, globalization, environment and organizations using quantitative methods
and statistics. He came to UCI in 2007 following an appointment at the University
of Minnesota. His wide-ranging research has been funded by the National Academy of
Education, the Spencer Foundation and UCI’s Center for the Study of Democracy. He
earned his undergraduate, master’s and doctorate at Stanford University. He’s the
author of Science in the Modern World Polity: Institutionalization and Globalization and his research has been published in the American Sociological Review, the International Journal of Comparative Sociology, and Social Forces, among others. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Sociology of Education.
All newly elected SRA members will be honored at a special dinner in August at the American Sociological Association annual meeting in Seattle. With their election, UCI now has 15 members of the SRA: Edwin Amenta, Nina Bandelj, Frank D. Bean, George Farkas, David Frank, Linton Freeman, Jennifer Lee, David S. Meyer, Francesca Polletta, Charles Ragin, Ruben G. Rumbaut, Evan Schofer, David Snow, Judith Treas, and Wang Feng.
