Remember when The New York Times understood the economics of the minimum wage?

Dave Neumark and William Wascher – respectively a professor at the University of California,
Irvine and a member of the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve System – literally
wrote the book on this topic. After analyzing the relevant academic literature in
2007, they came to the conclusion that 85 percent of the studies with “the most credible
evidence” showed “negative employment effects” following on the heels of minimum-wage
wage hikes. In non-economist speak, that means job losses.
