“Age discrimination laws will reduce firing,” says Patrick Button, co-author of the
working paper and Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Economics at the University
of California, Irvine. “But it may not protect older workers from discriminating from
hiring.” And when companies downsize in an economic downturn, he adds, it’s easier
to get rid of older, more expensive employees.
