From the OC Register:
UC Irvine is throwing itself a birthday party, and every one is invited. Students, staff and faculty at UCI are putting on a daylong event Saturday marking the university's 50th anniversary to show off the learning and research being done there and give a look into its goals for the future. The event, the Festival of Discovery, is intended to take academics out of UCI classrooms and show its real-world applications. “It's about doing it in a way that brings the community in and shows what we're doing out in the community,” said Bill Maurer, dean of the School of Social Sciences. An exhibit by the School of Social Sciences will offer the chance to play with Google Cardboard, the tech giant's low-tech virtual reality headset. Professors at UCI have been researching how to overcome motion sickness while in virtual reality, and the use of virtual reality by people with Parkinson's disease.
