UC Irvine economics professor Jan Brueckner said the newer South County cities don’t
have areas that can be considered downtowns because they’re mostly concentrated around
shopping centers. “There’s nothing like a downtown that’s the result of a random collection
of establishments that click and make for a wonderful place,” Brueckner said.
