Recognition of the importance of empathy has increasingly been voiced in the public sphere.  President Barack Obama, for instance, referred to an ‘empathy deficit’, while others have suggested that the contemporary period represents the coming of the ‘age of empathy’.  Drawing on examples from the Middle East, this talk will explore the conceptual and empirical challenges to developing empathy in deeply adversarial contexts.
