Lieven De Winter studied Political Science and Economics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He obtained his doctorate from the European University Institute, Florence. He is senior professor at the Université Catholique de Louvain. He has authored or edited a series of publications including Non-Statewide Parties in Europe (ICPS 1995), Regionalist Parties in Western Europe (Routledge 1998), Autonomist Parties in Europe: Identity Politics and the Revival of the Territorial Cleavage (ICPS 2006), The Politics of Belgium (Routledge 2009), and Puzzles of Government Formation: Coalition Theory and Deviant Cases (Routledge 2011).  He is also the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on coalition formation, party and cabinet government, parliament, political parties, territorial identities and community conflicts, and electoral behavior at the regional, national and European elections.
