Zimmerman holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California Los Angeles with specializations in political theory and race and ethnic politics. Her scholarship examines social movements and immigrant rights activism through the lens of democratic theory. Her current book project, Contesting Citizenship: Central Americans and the Politics of Belonging Across Borders, outlines a framework of citizenship within the context of transnational exclusion through a case study of U.S. Central American communities and their struggles for legalization. She is also working on new research in the areas of youth, civic engagement, and new media.
