Indonesia shift on gays tests climate of tolerance

Over the past nearly 20 years “Indonesian society is opening up all at once, so the
pro-gay stuff is stronger, but the antigay stuff is stronger at the same time,” said
Tom Boellstorff, an anthropologist at the University of California, Irvine, and the
author of a book about gay life in Indonesia.
