In his 2004 article, anthropologist Tom Boellstorff examines an attack perpetrated
by the Ka’bah Youth Movement Muslim group on an LGBT event in Kaliurang, at the foot
of Mt. Merapi in Yogyakarta. He coins the term “political homophobia” to describe
the emotional rage that emerges in response to a threat to normative masculinity that
represents the nation.
