Established in 2012, the Caesar D. Sereseres Outstanding Service Award is presented to undergraduates in the School of Social Sciences who demonstrate extraordinary service in educational, leadership and outreach programs within the social sciences and UCI community. Named for political science associate dean and associate professor Caesar Sereseres (pictured), the award honors the more than 20 years of service Sereseres has given to the UCI campus and community. This year, two students—Kathy Dong and Christopher Galeano—were recognized with the award.

An international studies, sociology and political science triple major, Galeano has served on the UCI Dean’s Ambassadors Council, DREAMS at UCI and the Latino Business Student Association. In terms of outreach, he currently serves as head coordinator of the social science academic mentoring program and has worked as a teaching assistant at the Summer Scholars Transfer Institute and the UCI Saturday Academy of Law. After graduation he plans to continue working with grassroots immigrant rights organizations to change and develop policies to improve the lives of immigrants.

Dong, a political science and sociology double major, has received three awards for her community service participation from Circle K International since 2010. She has worked as a student assistant with the Early Academic Outreach Program since the same year and has served as a peer academic advisor, English conversation program facilitator, student parent orientation program staffer, residential advisor for the California Summer School for Mathematics and Science and more since coming to UCI. She is also active in many student organizations, including serving as the Dean’s Ambassadors Council philanthropy and executive chair, and the Social Sciences Academic Mentorship chair. She was named the 2014-15 UCI XIV Dalai Lama scholar—a tremendous achievement—for her project that aims to connect high school students with UCI undergrads. After graduation, she plans to continue her education and eventually become a student affairs professional. She also hopes to conduct future research on the college experience of first-generation Vietnamese Americans.

Both students will be recognized at the Order of Merit Award ceremony on June 12.
