NEW
Semester Workbook for the Global Connect
International Relations and Globalization Course
for High School Students 2008-2009

Global Connect @ UCI's
semester tour around the world includes weekly political map identification exercises that provide students with the ability to recognize the location of the world's 205 nations.  These weekly exercises will allow students to locate and name the nations of each continent and significant regions.

A key and reoccurring theme of the International Studies and Globalization Course is the concept of global citizen and the ability of the individual or citizen based groups (NGOs) to directly address global environmental, economic, social and political challenges.  To complete the map studies, the students will be introduced to real heroes whose actions have impacted a variety of geographic regions.  These introductions will be made through video interviews, feature stories and assigned readings.

About the International Relations and Globalization Course Syllabus (2008-2009)

The 18 week course consists of three units:

I. Introduction to Globalization

The “Introduction to Globalization” focuses on the concepts of global citizenship, technology, mass media, cultural diversity, political geography, the 2008 election as a global event, and foreign policy.

II. The Project of Change

The “Project of Change” uses the millennium goals as a basis for studying the eight major needs and issues defined by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Lessons and workshops include the topics of AIDS, poverty and hunger, gender equity, universal education, environmental sustainability, and global economic partnerships.

An interactive capstone project allows students to develop their non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and relate local needs to global needs.

III. The Wealth of Nations/Country Profile Project

“The Wealth of Nations” introduces students to the study of economics through lessons on multinational corporations, international trade, and macroeconomic principles related to the global economy.

During the final weeks of the semester program, students are challenged to conduct independent online research on an assigned nation, to create a “Country Profile” PowerPoint , and to orally present their findings.

Emphasis on Literacy:

Global Connect curriculum has a dual focus. In addition to engaging students in global topics, the program emphasizes the use of non-fiction, primary source readings, map studies and original expository writing prompts to facilitate improved literacy skills.

Where is Global Connect?

Global Connect is headquartered in the School of Social Sciences at UCI.

2008-09 participants include administrators, teachers, and students in Newport Mesa and Saddleback Valley Unified School Districts.
