Endowed chair named for former chancellor
An anonymous donor has pledged more than $1 million to UC Irvine for the creation of the Jack W. Peltason Endowed Chair, named for the former UCI chancellor and University of California president.

"We are honored to have this endowed chair named for Jack Peltason, as it reflects his contributions as a distinguished scholar of political science and national leader in higher education," said Barbara Dosher, dean of the School of Social Sciences. Penelope Maddy, Chancellor's Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science and Mathematics, was recently awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by UC Irvine. Study finds personal contact key to bringing out low-income and minority voters
On Election Day in California, face-to-face canvassing of low-income and minority communities dramatically increases voter turnout within these historically low voter participant populations, according to a new study released by The James Irvine Foundation. Researchers including Lisa Garcia Bedolla, Chicano/Latino studies and political science associate professor with UC Irvine, found other personal contact outreach methods - including live phone calls - to be much more effective at turning out the vote than direct mail, recorded phone messages, and other commonly used voter mobilization tactics. A study by Jen'nan Read, sociology associate professor, is featured in a recently released special issue of the Social Science & Medicine journal. One of only 21 landmark pieces from the last 15 years selected to appear in the special issue focused on gender and health, the journal highlights Read's study, "Gender Inequalities in U.S. Adult Health: The Interplay of Race and Ethnicity," which originally appeared in the June 2006 issue. Scientists uncover how the brain controls what the eyes see
Expectations affect how we see things and experience life Vase or face? When presented with the well known optical illusion in which we see either a vase or the faces of two people, what we observe depends on the patterns of neural activity going on in our brains. "In this example, whether you see faces or vases depends entirely on changes that occur in your brain, since the image always stays exactly the same," said John Serences, a UC Irvine cognitive neuroscientist. Egypt's Consul General discusses country's role in Middle East with UCI students

On Thursday, November 15, 2007, Abderahman Salaheldin, Consul General of Egypt in San Francisco, visited UC Irvine to discuss with interested students, faculty and staff the role he sees Egypt playing in the Middle East peace process. Social Sciences alum partners with Project RESCUE to aid in wildfire relief

When one of the Southern California firestorms broke out in Ontario the night of Sunday, Oct. 21, the city's emergency response team turned to Jay Lickfett, lead software engineer at UCI's Calit2 RESCUE Project, for help. Lickfett had developed a disaster Web portal for Ontario that allowed emergency responders to provide the public with real-time information in a crisis, and now his system faced its first real test. "When the fire started, we knew we had to get our portal working," says Ontario Emergency Manager Jacob Green '05. Fortunately Green, who got a degree in social sciences from UCI, had connections. University Club Forum presents "Life Among the Lemurs" with Dowrene Hahn, anthropologist, on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 from 11:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the University Club.  Lunch service opens at 11:15 a.m. Club members $10; non-Club members $11.25. 12/05/2007 Memorial service for Tarow Indow
To commemorate the life and contributions of professor emeritus Tarow Indow, the department of cognitive sciences at UC Irvine will hold a memorial service on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the UCI University Club library. Professor Indow's widow, Minako, will attend the service.  
 
For those who are able to attend, some brief remarks at the service would be welcome. For those unable to attend, the department would welcome a short paragraph either to be read or distributed to those present.
