Penelope Maddy, Chancellor's Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science and Mathematics, was recently awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by UC Irvine. Considered the highest campus-level distinction, the title is reserved for "senior faculty who have achieved the highest levels of scholarship over the course of their careers."
The honor recognizes Maddy's significant contributions to the field logic and philosophy of science and mathematics. Since completing her Ph.D. in philosophy at Princeton University, Maddy has held professorships at the University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois at Chicago, and in 1987, she joined the faculty ranks at the University of California, Irvine.
Maddy's research on the logic and philosophy that underlie our general concept of mathematics has earned her numerous accolades including her induction to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998 and her recent election to president of the International Association of Symbolic Logic.
As the founding chair of the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, Maddy has played an instrumental role in building a nationally ranked graduate program. In 2006, the Philosophical Gourmet Report recognized the program's scholastic excellence and ranked the department first in the English-speaking world in the philosophies of science and math.
"Penelope Maddy is one of our most distinguished scholars," says Barbara Dosher, Dean of the School of Social Sciences. "She has contributed influentially to the international field of philosophy of logic and mathematics, and to the intellectual life of the Social Sciences. This is a well deserved honor."
With her newly bestowed title, Maddy marks the seventh Social Sciences faculty member to be recognized as a Distinguished Professor. She joins Professors David Easton, Duncan Luce, David Malament, Donald Saari, Brian Skyrms, and George Sperling in sharing this noteworthy distinction.
