The Freedom Train Rides On
Join us in celebrating two milestones over the next year as we honor the achievements of the late Dr. Joseph L. White and rededicate ourselves to his legacy.
Dr. White pioneered transgenerational mentorship. His scholarship and service were based on a commitment to equity, access, and opportunity in higher education.

He established the Equal Opportunity Program (EOP) across California and his leadership helped create Black studies and Comparative Cultures programs in colleges and universities across the country. He laid the foundation for UC Irvine's commitment to ensuring students from all the diverse backgrounds that make up our community thrive in the university, which is now recognized as being the country’s leader in access, affordability, and inclusion.
Celebratory events will honor the 45th Anniversary of the Cross-Cultural Center at UC Irvine and the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Dr. White's groundbreaking essay, "Toward a Black Psychology," published in Ebony magazine. This contribution set in motion the beginning of the modern era of African American and ethnic psychology and defined the discourse in the field of multicultural psychology. We will also announce the availability of the Dr. Joseph L. White Collection of personal and professional records at the UCI Libraries Special Collections and Archives Department.
Spurred on literally and figuratively by Dr. White, we hitch ourselves to what he called the Freedom Train - the long line of mentors and mentees he inspired. The founding parent of Black psychology, Dr. White wrote, taught, and demonstrated in practice the transformative power of mentorship across generations. With his passing in 2017, it is now our turn to pick up where he left off, attach our "cabooses" to the train, ride on, pulling others along with us. In recognition of students carrying forward the work Dr. White inaugurated, Student Affairs will announce and begin fundraising for the Dr. Joseph L. White Scholarship. In addition, we will dedicate an engraved plaque in the Cross inscribed with a timeline of Dr. White's achievements and contributions.

Freedom Train Stories
The UCI Libraries will launch an online portal for the collection of Freedom Train Stories, and will solicit memories, stories, and materials from Dr. White's mentees, their mentees, and other friends, family members and associates of Dr. White. This portal will also allow people to deposit digital scans of photographs, letters, files, or other articles related to the Dr. White and his broad impact. The UCI Libraries will catalog and curate this material, preserving it for generations to come.

Cross-Cultural Center 45th Anniversary Celebration and Dr. Joseph L. White Lecture
Jan 23 | UCI Cross Cultural Center
On October 16, 1974, Dr. White joined other faculty at UC Irvine to create the first support center for racial ethnic minority students in the entire UC system. In the intervening years, the Cross has built upon its values of activism, social justice, community, education, empowerment and diversity to provide a home away from home, as well as a launching pad for students who see the dream of - and are working to actualize - a more just and inclusive future. Join us to celebrate its 45th anniversary with the Dr. Joseph L. White Lecture and other events honoring its neraly half a century of making a difference. |

Book Launch: Mentoring First Generation Racial Ethnic Minorities in Higher Education: Riding the Freedom Train
Co-authored with Dr. White, this is his final published work, written with two of his celebrated mentees, Professor and Associate Dean Jeanett Castellanos and UCI alumnus Veronica Franco. The book launch will situate Dr. White’s contributions to the psychology of mentorship and provide an opportunity for Professor Castellanos to share how she is putting her own work into practice at UC Irvine, as well as outlining the agenda for future research in this area. |
